Ammerow: Lands Beyond

Pack for the descent. Plan for the return.

The rain has not stopped. The supply road has washed out. Village water tastes of iron, and somewhere below, the pressure is building.

A world that refuses to fit together

Ammerow: Lands Beyond is a free, single-player, turn-based roguelike about expeditions into a world that doesn't quite hold together. Descended from Angband, it pairs deep dungeon exploration with a dangerous overworld and side-view caves, where the journey down is only half the problem. Choose your adventurer's origin and class, buy what you can afford, and set out.

Into the Meridian

The Meridian stretches through a hundred surveyed depths: a shifting descent of monsters, magic, strange equipment and decisions that can end a promising life. There is time to consider every move, but no guarantee you'll survive the next one. Death is permanent. Knowing when to retreat is part of learning how to win.

A dungeon level in the Meridian: rooms, passages and treasure, with the surrounding layout revealed and remembered areas dimmed.
Rooms, passages and treasure in the Meridian. An Enlightenment potion has revealed the surrounding layout; remembered areas stay dimmer than the adventurer's immediate view.

The climb is only half the problem

Away from the dungeon stairs, another kind of expedition awaits. Find a cave mouth, peer over a ledge, hammer in a piton and lower a rope into the dark. Explore connected procedural caves, manage stamina and breath, and judge whether the treasure below is worth the climb back. A fall, an exhausted grip or a pool deeper than expected can be as dangerous as any monster.

Not every useful discovery needs a sword

Fish the underground pools, sell a valuable catch or help fill the village larder to unlock expedition provisions. Bring unwanted equipment home to sell, save for better supplies, or risk a fortune on an unidentified relic. Extraordinary artefacts have run-specific identities and stories of their own; the next promising find need not be the same as the last.

Coloured ASCII — or tiles

Coloured ASCII is at the heart of Ammerow. Zoom into the map, inspect monsters through detailed ASCII portraits, and meet illustrated shopkeepers before the next journey. An optional tile mode offers another way to read the world, while carefully crafted sound effects give weight to combat, climbing and discovery.
