The short answer is probably. Certainly he should be more than capable of following and succeeding with the book. However, does he already have ideas about how he wants to build games, for which platform (Android, Windows, etc.)?

If he wants to be a programmer in the fastest language used in the best engines then my book is hopefully a great starting point. If he would rather start with something simpler and more visual then there are other ways.

Take a look at this article which discusses how to choose the best place to start.
